Greg’s Daily News Commentary

  • Israel’s foreign minister expresses Tel Aviv’s grave concern over “a wave of anti-Semitism” sparked by the Israeli offensive in Gaza. COMMENT:   I will be accused of antisemitism on this comment. This article is about the international protests against Israel’s conduct of the Gaza war. This can hardly be called antisemitic! It is the Israeli ruthlessness against civilians that has sparked the wave of demonstrations. Israel’s 17-day-old offensive in the Gaza Strip has so far claimed the lives of at least 919 Palestinians, while some 4,100 others have been wounded and UN figures show that the majority of casualties and injuries are civilian. On the other side of the coin, at least 10 Israeli soldiers have been killed by resistance fighters in Gaza, while three Israelis have died in retaliatory rocket attacks by the Hamas movement. If the Israelis consider this protest antisemitic, they are claiming infallibility in their right to wage war.  Read If Israel does it then it can’t be wrong for the other side of the coin
  • WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday he was not ruling out possible prosecution for abuses committed under the George Bush administration, saying no one “is above the law”.
MY REACTION:  Can’t you just see it – all those neo-cons who have abused the rules of war dressed in orange jump suits, shackled of course, wandering aimlessly behind the razor wire at Camp Delta whilst the new administration spends the next eight years deliberating whether they will prosecute or not. Maybe that’s why Obama has signaled that he will not be able to close Guantanamo Bay in his first 100 days. If only …

  1. I was just watching stuff from a Swedish comic who went to an open mic night at a cub in New York and started making jokes about Gaza

“Self defence? Hamas is like the kid throwing rocks at a humvee, and Israel decides to run him over in self defence… and then reverse over him again”

  2. The Gaza war takes some pretty heavy comment in today’s press:
    Synagogues attacked across France
    Israel accused of Gaza ‘Genocide’
U.S. arms shipment to Israel canceled due to Gaza conflict
Hill of Shame where Gaza bombing is spectator sport
Ten Israeli soldiers choose jail over Gaza
… with the general consensus that Gaza is being razed by Israel’s overuse of force and non-conventional weopons. Even their own soldiers have begun balking.

Whilst on the wrongdoings of the Bush administration, read this one:
Cheney hints at pardon for President Bush
With the Bush administration in its final days questions are being asked whether the president will be investigated over a number of concerns. Those concerns include the legitimacy, legality, and constitutionality of the 2003 invasion of Iraq [not to mention, the legitimacy, legality, and constitutionality of the Bush Reign of Terror]; the controversial eavesdropping by the NSA of U.S. citizens; the authorization of the use of torture; and the treatment and processing of prisoners at prisons in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib… Dick Cheney seemingly is one of those that wants to move on as he unexpectedly raised, and drew parallels with, President Ford’s pardon of former President Nixon this week, hinting that similar treatment should be afforded President [sic] Bush.

  3. Brilliant news on the Israeli soldiers resisting. Good to see some people in Israel realise they’re just being used by a state they have no real stake in.
