Life Support Oxygen – 01 May 2012

Status:   I do not apologise for the descriptive language used in describing how life operates as the body is winding down.  I think it is information that cannot be readily identified and if it helps others heading down a similar path, that is a bonus.

Over the last couple of days, I have struggled against the phlegm lodged in my lungs.  I believe the antibiotics are doing a job as I am not bringing as much up muck and not as frequently.  I wake up feeling great and then I get out of bed and have to go through the maintenance ordeal to become functional.  First, I have to clear the airways with a variety of puffers.  Then, I have to take my pain management tablets all the while shaking and coughing and wondering if I can get through this regime one more time.

Yesterday, the district nurse massaged and pummeled my back dislodging the muck from my lungs.  As a result, a lot more phlegm came away.

Oxygen ConcentratorThis is the life support oxygen concentrator that allows me to breath a lot better than before.  It filters out the nitrogen and is capable of producing 5 litres of almost pure oxygen a minute.  At the moment, I require 4 litres/minute.

It has an air line measured to go from one end of the house to the other.  It has the in-nostril cannula seen in the hospital.  It is about as noisy as a refrigerator so it lives in the spare bedroom.  It is essential to be using it all night but during the day, I check to see if I can do without it.  Sometimes I can – sometimes I cannot.

I have also been supplied with three portable oxygen bottles that each provide about 7 hours of oxygen supply.  These are used in the back yard or in the car when I go to the doctor.

Once again, this is a no cost service to those pensioners registered with the Palliative Care people.
