The Australian Government has been accused of accounting fraud in the reporting of its carbon emissions.
By ignoring a massive rise in polluting gases from the agricultural and forestry industries, Australia has managed to make its overall emissions seem much lower than they actually are.

‘Get out of jail free’

Everyhing our government does with this issue is tricky.
Over the weekend, Penny Wong was upset because the draft agreement at Copenhagen called for each country to reduce carbon emissions within their borders. Australia had intended to give money to small developing countries to help them reduce their emissions but had intended to claim the savings for Australia.
Tony Abbott has it right when he says we can reduce emissions in Australia rather than tax the population to maintain business as usual.
Well, even Tony’s not too sure we can! He’s all over the place on this issue and certainly has not ruled out any kind of tax and is even talking about emissions trading again. We’ll have to wait for his policy to come out before anything can be stated with any certainty.
And he certainly hasn’t been able to show a way of reducing Australia’s emmisions significantly (of course we can reduce them, but not by enough) without one, which is why he’s had to back track.

Yes, that emminent Professeor & Climatologist Dr Tony Abbott knows exactly what he’s talking about, Greg. He’s got a great policy too – “do nothing”. And it only took him 11 years in Govt to come to that position.
