Swine flu has reached the media pandemic stage with the chief medical officer suggesting that Australian swine flu cases could hit 2 million.

Ian Barr, deputy director of the Melbourne-based WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, said Australia’s experience may be worse than the northern hemisphere’s because the virus was coinciding with the start of the southern flu season.

It seems that swine flu is already out of control with every orgnaisation and government department under fire for mishandling the outbreak

Two insurers – AAMI and CGU – confirmed to BusinessDaily that they would exclude coverage for medical costs and other unforeseen travel expenses if policyholders were struck by swine flu overseas.

Well that’s where the country stands today but what do we know of the effects on the individual? … and what can we do to protect ourselvesat the coal face?

There is no medical protection. Tamilfu is useful if you have it, but apparently offers no protection before the event.

And there is no point in phoning the Swine Flu hotline – all you’ll get is crackling (joke).

In the absence of further information, the only thing I know of is to avoid outside contact or use a face mask. But, of course, we are Aussies. We wouldn’t be seen to be panicking by wearing a medical mask, would we?

Whilst on the subject of faec masks, I see that coffee filters are being put to this use – particularly in countries where face masks have been accepted.

Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

  1. Hi Greg, you’ve been off the air a bit lately but it’s good to see you back. For a while there I was worried you might have gone to a Collingwood game and got too close to the cheer squad and caught the swine flu.

For me, I’m just staying away from those northern & western suburbs AND I’m not accepting any bookings from people who live there. I’m also going nowhere near a certain municipal building in Churchill Avenue Bright. It’s crawling with swine down there.

    Cheers.
