The main chemical in marijuana appears to aid in the destruction of brain cancer cells, offering hope for future anti-cancer therapies, researchers in Spain wrote in a study released Thursday.

The authors from the Complutense University in Madrid, working with scientists from other universities, found that the active component of marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), causes cancer cells to undergo a process called autophagy — the breakdown that occurs when the cell essentially self-digests.

The research, which appears in the April edition of US-published Journal of Clinical Investigation, demonstrates that THC and related “cannabinoids” appear to be “a new family of potential antitumoral agent.”  The authors wrote that the chemical may prove useful in the development of future “antitumoral agents.”

The scientists conducted their research on mice, first stimulating the growth of cancer in the lab animals, then injecting them with a daily dose of THC near the site of their tumors.

The researchers also analyzed the tumors of two patients in an experimental trial looking at the effects of THC on a highly aggressive form of brain tumor, and saw findings “in line with the preclinical evidence” first observed in the laboratory mice.

Weekly update letter

Dear family and friends

Well, it has been a quiet Easter and I have just had my daughter Anthea and her two sons Darcy and Angus staying overnight. It is so good to catch up with them again.

Pauline is away for a week visiting her daughter Natalie and her family, Paul and their children Isla and Luka. It is Isla’s second birthday and, as Luka has finished his first term at school, Pauline has been looking forward to this trip for a few months. Whilst she is away, a few neighbours have volunteered to check me out on a daily basis so I should be OK. It is an old family joke but it is also true that Pauline goes away and I get the holiday. I guess the break will be good for both of us.

Well, the experiment to refrain from the hormone implant back in January was not successful. With the PSA reading back to normal, we stopped the treatment to see if we could ease the sweat attacks.  As it turned out, they actually became more severe.  Furthermore, the bone cancer has made things more uncomfortable in recent weeks.

Palliative Care came to the rescue increasing my base opiate intake. Between the morphine and some THC, I am back in my comfort zone for the time being. As of next week, it is back to the girly pills hormone implant injection.

  1. Hmm, maybe we should all sample your ‘THC medicine’ at the next bloggers meet, Greg? That’d loosen things up a bit.

  2. You mean, er, sexual arousion, Greg? Well, I won’t be getting sexually aroused in front of you, Dave, Kieran & JR. Not my types. I’ll just laugh a lot.

  3. Politicians are 10 years behind the times when it comes to hemp use. People have been fighting for a long time against marijuana and pot prohibition with some movement going on now. Still too slow for those caught up in the jail system for possessing a little weed. Our freedoms have been trampled on by folks who know nothing about how beautiful cannabis can be for someones life, if one learns how to grow cannabis. Keep up the good work.
