A damning UN report on asylum seekers

with one comment

Australia should take urgent and adequate measures to ensure that nobody is returned to a country where they are at risk of being arbitrarily deprived of their life…

The UN Human Rights Committee says it’s concerned by reports Australia has not fully respected the principle of non-refoulement, which states asylum seekers shouldn’t be returned to a country if their lives or freedoms are threatened.

It’s been suggested that up to 20 Afghans were killed by the Taliban after having their claims for asylum rejected by Australia.

“Australia does not meet the requirements of article 40 of the Covenant regarding the provision of sufficient and adequate information on the measures adopted to give effect to the covenant rights, as well as on the progress made in the enjoyment of those rights,” the committee said.

Comment: Until this report appeared, we had unconfirmed reports of rejected asylum seekers being killed on return to their country of origin.  Now the truth is now out and we witness a pedantic ruthlessness within the Howard Government that must never be repeated.  Please fix it Mr Rudd!

  1. Yet the right-wingers out there are still decrying Rudd’s softer policy on boat people. They seem to want all of them sent back. The pretext they use is that the new policy encourages people to risk their lives on the open seas. But the reality is these right-wingers don’t give a sh*t about the welfare of the refugees – they just don’t want them here.
