Weekly update letter

Dear family and friends

I had my quarterly check up with the Urologist and he was pretty excited to find my PSA reading down to 5.5 –  that’s almost back to the normal range between 0 and 4.

He was also impressed that my recent bone scan showed improvement over the one taken back in April.

“Why then”, I asked, “am I still in pain and suffering all these other side effects of the treatment?”

He said that as I have A LOT of tumors through my pelvic girdle and up the spine, it is not uncommon to feel as I do. Not real comforting …

A more recent problem I have had is fluid in the legs below the Knees.  My GP had blood tests taken and is satisfied that it is not being caused by my heart, liver, kidney or any other function and is at a loss to explain it.

The Urologist suggests it is either being caused by my medications (which are causing other problems) or the cancer has spread to the lymph glands in which case, they have no remedy.  The only way to find out is by experimentation with my medications.  He thinks I could be suffering side effects of too much morphine and has suggested weaning my self off it as much as I can and to supplement it with my herbal cigarettes.

He also offered radiation treatment, but upon discussion we found that good tissue – and sometimes the bowel – are destroyed whilst attacking the tumor. I have noted that as a treatment of last resort as I am not there yet.

So, as of today, I have stopped taking the anti-inflamatories as they are a possible aggravant to the fluid on the legs and I have reduced the base morphine level by 10% and, upon ‘pain breakthrough’ have used my alternate treatment instead of taking liquid morphine around three times a day.  It is now 11pm and SO-FAR … SO-GOOD!

Over the nine months of the hormone therapy, I have lost all my energy, I have lost control of my body temperature and suffered the dulling of the mind – all documented side effects of hormone therapy.  As my PSA is so low, we have agreed that I will NOT continue the hormone therapy in February as planned.  Of course, I will be monitored to see when the PSA starts rising and it will be straight back on it.  I am excited about this move.

My web research tells me that this intermittent hormone therapy can extend the effectiveness of the hormone therapy.  It also tells me that many of those on it, hate going back to the hormone, as the dreaded side effects have a holiday as well and the guys feel ‘normal’ again.  They even tell me that the impotence disappears.  I can but dream!

Sex Kills Men and Women

Sex Kills Men and Women

I couldn’t resist lifting this diagram from the blog of a prostate cancer sufferer’s wife who wrote: (or click image for the full story)

Well folks, the circus has come to town. Unfortunately, the subject of this spectacle is prostate cancer. If you haven’t been in a coma in the last few days you must have seen the headline: SEX CAUSES CANCER!! – discussing the Sexual Activity and Prostate Cancer Risk in Men Diagnosed at a Younger Age

I wrote about this a couple of posts ago but this is a good read with a couple of good links on the topic.

Life is a sexually transmitted terminal disease and it is not only men who can be killed by sex. All sexually active females are subject to contracting cervical cancer.  That is why the immunisation of our daughters is such a worthwhile exercise.

I’ll update you with my progress next week
